hello, I'm

Lisa Cowdery RM

After experiencing midwifery care and an out-of-hospital birth with my second baby in 2011, the call to become a midwife became impossible to ignore. As I couldn’t fathom attending a midwifery education program with a toddler and newborn in tow, I chose to train as a doula in 2012 before later transitioning into attending births as a holistic birth consultant while providing support as a community herbalist and a Birthing From Within™ trained childbirth educator in the YYC area. My children grew up surrounded by obstetrical textbooks and online webinars as I immersed myself in on-call life, taught childbirth classes, attended births and traveled around Canada and the US seeking out midwifery training workshops. Two years after the birth of my third baby, I was accepted into Mount Royal University’s midwifery education program. I was granted my Bachelor of Midwifery degree in 2020.

I believe that optimal maternity care exists when birthing people have access to a full spectrum of options and are unequivocally supported to navigate their pregnancies and births without being presented the burden of a “one right choice”. I’m passionate about providing full-spectrum, inclusive reproductive healthcare to birthing families in Central Alberta and am overjoyed to be a part of Prairie Midwives.

Outside of my birth work, I’m a whiskey and coffee aficionado, mum to three small humans and wife to an amazing partner. I love gardening, wild fermentation, loud music, knitted sweaters, reading books & cozy fireplaces.
